It has become the world\u2019s first &nbsp;GM banana to gain approval as human food, in the Oceania region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the turn of the millennium, researches in Queensland have been developing QCAV-4. &nbsp;20 years on, Food Standards Australia (FSA) as well as New Zealand\u2019s FSA have approved it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/technology\/science\/australia-is-getting-a-totally-new-banana\/news-story\/37df11bd43180e2a8c15d5107dd2a8ba\"><u>\u201cThis is a major step&#8230;,<\/u><\/a>\u201d says Queensland University of Technology\u2019s James Dale. The professor now awaits governmental sanction to grow the banana on local farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For staunch organic food backers, QCAV-4 remains a common Cavendish banana, plus a new gene by the name RGA2. Scientists substituted it from a popular species that grows in south-east Asia, known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/plants\/musaceae\/musa-acuminata\/\"><u>Musa acuminata, malaccensis<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The genetic modification has made it a winner in the fight against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/11\/03\/icar-nrcb-director-dr-selvarajan-discusses-merits-of-new-wilt-resistant-cavendish-mutant-including-its-similarity-to-organic-grand-naine-banana\/\"><u>wilting diseases&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>affecting Cavendish bananas in the tropics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most common and deadliest is Panama Disease or TR4, which rises from a fungus in the ground. &nbsp;The microorganism can live in the soil for half-a-century, during which it destroys generations of plantations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With TR4 dwarfing exports of many banana-producing nations, QCAV-4 may rebound the AUD$1.3 billion ($854.49 million) banana industry of Australia. Licensing the cultivation of this GM banana will secure livelihoods for 18,000 people in Queensland who depend on banana farming for livelihood.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Queensland is home to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agscience.org.nz\/australian-government-approves-release-of-a-genetically-modified-variety-of-cavendish-bananas\/\"><u>95%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of Australia\u2019s bananas, with 97% of the portion being Cavendish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Genetically modified banana is the first non-organic product that Australia has legalized, thereby matching other developing markets with their enhanced pineapples. One of these is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/09\/25\/hans-sauter-on-pinkglow-pineapples-innovation-has-allowed-fresh-del-monte-to-differentiate-product-lines-that-cater-to-different-market-segments\/\"><u>Pinkglow\u00a0<\/u><\/a>, a lycopene-rich pineapple by Fresh Delmonte, which made its appearance in Costa Rica in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, it is not certain when the governments of Australia and New Zealand will sanction the cultivation and sale of QCAV-4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are usually 60 days between a FSA approval and the review by the Food Ministers\u2019 Meeting before sales can start. &nbsp;Food Ministers\u2019 Meeting is a joint New Zealand-Australia body of ministers that reviews emerging food issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It may look exactly like a typical Cavendish banana, but QCAV-4 is actually a genetically modified banana.
