{"id":19819,"date":"2024-01-26T09:47:21","date_gmt":"2024-01-26T09:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=19819"},"modified":"2024-01-26T09:47:24","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T09:47:24","slug":"chinas-tiajing-port-cashes-in-on-cherries-from-chile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/01\/26\/chinas-tiajing-port-cashes-in-on-cherries-from-chile\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s Tiajing port cashes in on cherries from Chile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new shipping route via\u00a0China\u2019s northern port city of Tiajing could help reduce the wholesale cost of cherries from Chile by<a href=\"https:\/\/global.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/202401\/17\/WS65a7a1eda3105f21a507cd53_1.html\"><u>\u00a050%<\/u><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally, cherries from Latin America had to land in south China before lengthy dispatches to the north, exacerbating costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of January 18, 2024, a half kilogram of Chilean cherries were costing<a href=\"http:\/\/subsites.chinadaily.com.cn\/ningbo\/2024-01\/18\/c_956847.htm\"><u>&nbsp;200 Yuan&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>($27.86). At 400 Yuan $55.72 a kg, this wholesale price is a little more than in 2022 when the same cherries cost 383.96 yuan ($53.5).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) attributed the fall in Chinese supplies in 2022 to\u00a0the COVID-19 pandemic, which offset distribution. USDA also predicted an increase of<a href=\"https:\/\/fas.usda.gov\/data\/china-stone-fruit-annual-6\"><u>\u00a08%<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in cherry production in China, which would help it reduce reliance on other sources. In its part, the U.S. exports cherries to mainly neighbouring\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/08\/25\/u-s-cherries-denied-entry-into-taiwan-for-at-least-a-month\/\"><u>Taiwan.<\/u><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chile-china-cherry-trade-a-7-year-timeline\"><strong>Chile-China Cherry Trade: a 7-year Timeline<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past 7 years, China-bound cherries from Chile used to land at the port of Dalian in the south. They would then take five hours to transport by road or air to the northern metropolises of Hubei, Beijing and Tiajing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 2023, however, the municipality that runs Tiajing port initiated a direct shipping line to Chile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides, the customs authority launched a direct unloading bay to give priority to these perishables over other goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2017, exports of cherries from Chile to China have been growing by an average rate of 29% per year. &nbsp;According to Xinhua, quoting the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association, Chile could export&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinaview.cn\/20240119\/091fa567af95459d92efce642646989b\/c.html\"><u>85%&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>of its cherries to China in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, cherry production in Chile has expanded by 1800% between the years 2000 and 2022. While there were just 3,241 hectares at the turn of the millennium, by 2022 this had expanded to 61,559 hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For seven years, Chile and China have been the biggest export and import markets of each other\u2019s agricultural goods. Starting 2017, 98% of all trade products between the two countries have been enjoying 0% tariffs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-enter-tiajing-route\"><strong>Enter Tiajing Route<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The coming of the direct shipping route may expand this thriving bilateral trade, including an increment in cherry shipments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, the Tiajing port expects\u00a0to handle <u><a href=\"https:\/\/global.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/202401\/17\/WS65a7a1eda3105f21a507cd53_1.html\">5,800 tonnes\u00a0<\/a><\/u>in South American produce before the end of January. This is on top of\u00a02500 tonnes of Chilean cherries that steamed in on January 17, 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 20,000 km by sea, the Tiajing route from Chile is longer than the diameter of the earth (12,756 km along the equator). However, the route saves 30 hours spent on earlier routes via south China. &nbsp;The port also lowers&nbsp;overland transportation and preservation&nbsp;expenses by&nbsp;30%.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, the reduced logistical costs will enable Chinese buyers to purchase fresh cherries at half the current price.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new shipping route via\u00a0China\u2019s northern port city of Tiajing could help reduce the wholesale cost of cherries from Chile by\u00a050%.\u00a0 Originally, cherries from Latin America had to land in south China before lengthy dispatches to the north, exacerbating costs.
