One of these exports is avocados, of which the minister said Peru\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/andina.pe\/agencia\/noticia-perus-2023-exports-projected-to-reach-previous-years-level-969487.aspx\"><u>ranks second\u00a0<\/u><\/a>worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mathews&#8217; projections echo a rise by 9% in total avocado exports from January to September 2023 in comparison to 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By September, Peru\u2019s avocado shipments to 36 nations had raked in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.producebluebook.com\/2023\/12\/26\/peruvian-avocado-exports-reached-953mm-through-september-2023\/\"><u>\u00a0$953 million<\/u><\/a>, above the $874 million of January to September, 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to monetary returns, the quantities worth 594,778 metric tonnes also registered a 3% growth in the same market period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Netherlands received the bulk of avocado exports from Peru worth $293 million or 30.7% of all shipments. The United States, which partitions avocado imports between&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/08\/28\/u-s-market-leaning-peru-avocado-season-ending-while-mexicos-is-just-starting\/\"><u>Peru and Mexico,<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;came in third after Spain, at $135 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-el-ni-o-effects\"><strong>El Ni\u00f1o Effects<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This improvement is despite a slight dip in August 2023 due to adverse weather effects that preceded the El Ni\u00f1o weather phenomenon. During that month, production fell to 45,041 metric tonnes or 6.9% below August 2022&#8217;s volumes due to dry conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts cite that Peru\u2019s avocado crop in 2024 may also suffer<a href=\"#:~:text=Currently%2C%20most%20forecasts%20from%20specialists%20indicate%20that%20the,of%20the%20fruit%2C%20similar%20to%20the%20previous%20season.\"><u>&nbsp;physiological development&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>from much precipitation. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the January to March 2024 El Ni\u00f1o rains will coincide with the harvest season. While the Fuerte variety is usually ready before March, the Hass cultivar matures from March through June.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When presenting the export estimates, minister Mathews stated that El Ni\u00f1o negatively impacted fruit production and fisheries in 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the sea, rising warm currents from the Pacific lowered fish catches due to lack of plankton and seaweed for fish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this weather backlash, the minister takes pride that Peru still ranks \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/andina.pe\/agencia\/noticia-perus-2023-exports-projected-to-reach-previous-years-level-969487.aspx\"><u>number one &nbsp;in grapes, blueberries and aparagus.<\/u><\/a>\u201d The South American nation is also a world leader in organic banana and coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peru was the 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;biggest exporter in the world for agricultural and non-agricultural goods in 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peru\u2019s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Juan Carlos Mathews estimated on January 8, 2024 that national exports in 2023 would equal 2022\u2019s.
