{"id":19696,"date":"2024-01-03T09:45:06","date_gmt":"2024-01-03T09:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/?p=19696"},"modified":"2024-01-03T09:46:07","modified_gmt":"2024-01-03T09:46:07","slug":"morocco-beats-weather-odds-heading-for-a-60000-ton-avocado-harvest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2024\/01\/03\/morocco-beats-weather-odds-heading-for-a-60000-ton-avocado-harvest\/","title":{"rendered":"Morocco beats weather odds, heading for a 60,000-ton avocado harvest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Blessed with a mild climate, Northwestern Morocco which constitutes such regions as Gharb and Larache is expecting to harvest 60,000 tonnes of avocados.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The harvest follows on the heels of a long-term drought that hit most of Morocco in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike the Sahel region, however, the north experiences rainfall of up to<a href=\"https:\/\/weather-and-climate.com\/average-monthly-Rainfall-Temperature-Sunshine-in-Morocco\"><u>&nbsp;98 mm<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;in the wettest month of November.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Larache-based grower Mohamed Lackchouch, Morocco\u2019s avocados are water-draining trees that require<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-xl\/news\/other\/morocco-farmers-on-track-for-a-bumper-avocado-harvest\/ar-AA1mbKU6\"><u>&nbsp;30 liters<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;every hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, farmers like Lackchouch alternate rain water with irrigation. The irrigation system uses sensor technology to feed each plant with 15 liters per hour, half the optimum margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farm technology such as drones to spray exacting water on crops is currently enjoying wide adoption&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/news\/2023\/12\/04\/tunisia-and-the-maghreb-save-irrigation-water-with-drones\/\"><u>across the Maghreb<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-morocco-s-avocado-exports-growing\"><strong>Morocco\u2019s Avocado Exports Growing<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After fighting weather odds with technology, Morocco\u2019s avocado farmers are likely to export higher tonnage in 2024 than last season\u2019s. The current 2023-24 harvest estimate of 60,000 tonnes already surpasses the 2022-23 one by over 33%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between July 2022 and May 2023, avocado exports reached 45,000 metric tonnes, worth<a href=\"https:\/\/naturenews.africa\/amid-water-scarcity-morocco-emerges-worlds-9th-largest-avocado-exporter\/\"><u>\u00a0$139 million<\/u><\/a>. That season, Morocco claimed the slot of the 9<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0biggest avocado-exporting nation. Only Kenya had more exports for an African country that period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Morocco exports almost all of its avocado harvest, with the Hass cultivar making up 90% of the consignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-lucrative-eu-export-destinations\"><strong>Lucrative EU Export destinations<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This bulk goes to lucrative export markets in the European Union (EU) that include Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is Germany, however, the world\u2019s 5<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;biggest avocado importer, that has brought growth momentum to Morocco\u2019s avocado exports. End 2023 figures show that Morocco has been exporting 10% of its \u201cgreen gold\u201d to Germany.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2023, the export base had expanded dramatically from just Morocco\u2019s Mediterranean neighbor, Spain, to 19 nations. &nbsp;Italy, Portugal and Russia are the three other major importers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-small-fruits-this-season\"><strong>Small Fruits this Season<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the flip side, a fruit size problem hovers over the harvest and may impact the export market\u2019s preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farmers say they are harvesting small-sized fruits, which might affect demand in a market that prefers large sizes.
