The season is ending in two days\u2019 time, on August 25, after the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlf.louisiana.gov\/news\/recreational-greater-amberjack-state-federal-fishing-season-to-close-august-25\"><u>Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council\u00a0<\/u><\/a>drew the curtain on the catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is per <u><a href=\"#:~:text=News-,2023%2F2024%20Recreational%20Harvest%20of%20Greater%20Amberjack%20in%20Federal%20Waters,Close%20on%20August%2025%2C%\">Amendment 54,<\/a><\/u>\u00a0a fishing regulation bill that came into force July 17, 2023. The bill reduced the target catch limit this year for greater amberjack to 335,320 pounds (152,418 kg).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Each person buys a fishing license with a daily limit of one fish, which must be at least 34 inches long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of the closure is to help spawn new numbers of the species whose population is currently low due to commercial&nbsp;<a href=\"#:~:text=News-,2023%2F2024%20Recreational%20Harvest%20of%20Greater%20Amberjack%20in%20Federal%20Waters,Close%20on%20August%2025%2C%\"><u>overfishing<\/u><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common types of amberjack include greater amberjack, lesser amberjack and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/guides\/yellowtail-fish-origins-nutrition-preparation\/\"><u>yellowtail amberjack.<\/u><\/a>\u00a0Another name for the last one is yellowtail tuna, due to the striking similarity with the biologically unrelated\u00a0sub-tropical <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/nutrition\/food\/yellowfin-tuna-raw\/\">yellowfin tuna<\/a><\/u>. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tunas are Scombridae family members while amberjacks, with their typical forked tails, belong to the Caringidae family. One of the most popular Caringidaes is the Japanese amberjack (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/y5258e\/y5258e.pdf\"><u>buri<\/u><\/a>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yellowtail amberjack is a delicacy synonymous with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/guides\/yellowtail-fish-origins-nutrition-preparation\/\"><u>sushi&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>seafood dishes. It has a taste reminiscent of a tuna mixed with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.selinawamucii.com\/nutrition\/food\/fish-mahimahi-raw\/\"><u>mahi-mahi&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>, a heavy dolphin fish often found in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/07\/31\/us\/maryland-mahi-mahi-fishing-record-trnd\/index.html\"><u>Hawaii.<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;The texture is firmer than a tuna\u2019s and the buttery flavor is also stronger than that of a tuna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other than size, the difference between greater and lesser amberjacks is the\u00a0<a href=\"#:~:text=In%20greater%20amberjack%20the%20nuchal,white%20tips%20on%20their%20tails.\"><u>nuchal stripe<\/u><\/a>. Greater amberjacks\u00a0have a distinguishing\u00a0black stripe\u00a0along their heads that starts from the nose and ends at the first dorsal fin. The smaller \u2018lesser amberjacks\u2019 have a bar that extends from the eye to just shy of the dorsal fin.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although greater amberjacks are available year-round, they are usually in plenty around August through October in the Gulf of Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amberjack buying points in Fl and La<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For anyone seeking to buy amberjack in Florida, Key West and Key Largo are great starting points.
