Characteristics The plantain, green plantain, hartón plantain or stewed plantain (Musa sapientum L. var paradisiaca), is a fruit from the Musaceae family, like the plantain or banana.
The green plantain is larger than the banana, has a thick green or brownish skin and its pulp is floury, rich in starch and therefore much less sweet than bananas rich in sugar.
Varieties The varieties grown in the Dominican Republic are: FHIA 21-20 which is a hybrid known as Macho x Hembra Alto Morado. This type of plantain is grown mainly in the northern part of the country which has the highest production.
In the northwest area, the FHIA-21 and FHIA-20 are planted, which is a hybrid known as Macho x Hembra Morado. Finally, in the southern area, the Macho x Hembra 3/4 and Macho Alto are harvested, which constitutes the area of lowest relative production.
